Thrifted Refashion: Wool Skirt

A couple posts back, I showed you all my thrift haul and I told gave you some insight on how I wanted to refashion or alter a few of the pieces that I picked up.
thrifthaul1When I saw this particular wool skirt, I pictured an older woman wearing this with a matching wool jacket and white botton-up top.  I loved the structure of this skirt but wanted to put a younger spin on it, so the easiest thing to do was to shorten it and pair it with bright fun colors.
woolblogIn the Fall, I throw on black tights with just about everything and with Hanes, they have so many fun prints that take my basic black into something fun and unexpected.  I was sent a few tights to style and I absolutely love them all.  Thank you Hanes!
hanesThe tights that I chose to wear with this outfit are the Hanes Silk Reflections Animal Tights.  They’re modern and it brings an unexpected sexiness to my casual outfit.  Throw on a pair of printed tights and you’ve automatically updated your outfit.

Thank you Hanes for sponsoring this post.

Thrift Haul

Hi everyone. So I recently went thrifting and found some great things. I’m super excited to share it with you all and hopefully if you don’t thrift, I’ll inspire you to start.  So in the past few years, thrifting has gotten really popular and so thrift stores have ridiculously started to raise their prices on the things that were DONATED to them. (I’m really mad about that if you can’t tell.) I don’t understand why they do that, but I guess it’s all business.  So, with the things that I purchased, I plan to either make some alterations or do a slight makeover to create something that is currently on trend.  If you follow me on Instagram @cheapbutchic, you will have seen one item I’ve already made over. Anyhow, let’s get started with the haul.

Ok. so when you first see this, you may be slightly scared and think, “What the heck was she thinking?” Well, the number one rule when thrifting is that you must think outside the box.  If you sew, you can take your thrifting up a whole new level because you can recreate and alter your finds. I bought this for $8.99 because I was inspired by this years hottest trend; the sleeveless trench coat. thrifthaul4Here is my inspiration: karla11 I love the way Ashley from FabEllis styled her sleeveless trench coat. ash1 My next thrifted find was this gray wool skirt.  The price for this skirt was $3.99. Wool skirts are a must have for Fall and Winter. This is such a classic piece and it’s must have for cooler weather because it keeps your bum warm.  I plan to shorten it to make it a bit more chic. thrifthaul1Here is my inspiration: Blake+Lively+Cinema+Society+BlackBerry+Bold+zI-FOU1F8eXl

My next thrifted item that I purchased was this long jean skirt. The price for this skirt was $4.99. I do plan on make some minor changes to this skirt as well…well, just a bit of shortening and distressing. thrifthaulHere is my inspiration: jeanskirt1So ofcourse I had to save the best for last.  The retail price on this coat is $220 found HERE. The price for this coat was $29.99, but I paid $22 because my thrift store has a sale every Monday.  This jacket looks brand new and it’s just plain beautiful! No alterations will be made on this coat because it’s perfect as is. I’ll just be dropping it off at my local dry cleaners as with all the rest of these clothes. thrifthaul3Here is my inspiration: plus-size-trench-coatWhat do you think about my finds?  Have you been thrifting lately? If so let me know what you’ve found. I’d love to hear.  Also if you haven’t been thrifting or never been, I hope I’ve inspired you. name

Seven

We made it to seven years of marriage! Woo hoo!  My husband and I met about 10 years ago when we were both stationed in Germany.  Seven years and 2 kids later, I can trully say it’s beena rough road but it’s all worth it.  God has trully blessed us!andrewtab1

So when we got married, we decided that instead of spending money on extravagant gifts for one another, we would get creative and follow the tradional wedding gift list.  I loved this idea because it’s quite exciting to see what we can come up with for one another.  Although I may seem like the most creative one out of us both, he has outdone himself every year.
1st Year: Paper
2nd Year: Cotton
3rd Year: Leather
4th Year: Fruit/ Flowers
5th Year: Wood
6th Year: Candy/ Iron

This year, I think I have finally came up with an amazing gift that he would enjoy.  This year, is the year of wool and/or copper.
7Copper has a traditional meaning of prosperity, good luck, and good fortune. Couples who celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary can indeed celebrate their good fortune in finding one another.
The gift of wool represents the comfort, durability, security, and warmth that couples married this long give one another.

Since he enjoys my sewing, I decided to go ahead make him a toiletry bag made from faux wool (felt) and faux leather.  I went to this upscale shaving boutique, The Art of Shaving, and filled his bag with some shaving balm, shaving cream, after shave, a shaving brush, and gorgeous copper shaving razor.
bag

The toiletry bag took quite some time because since I was using contrasting thread, I had to make sure that everything was perfectly straight.
bag2bag1If you want to make this toiletry bag for a special man in your life, you can use the makeup bag tutorial that I linked below and adjust the measurements as follows:
Zipper (Metal): 16″-18″
Main Bag (Felt): 12″ x 16″
Lining: (Duck Cloth): 12″ x 16″
Interfacing: 12″ x 16″
* Take note: When measuring your corners, each corner should be 2.5″ deep and 5″ across.

DIY iPad Sleeve by Victor + Alexander

So my little brother is back from college!  Yaaayy!!! I asked him to come up with a DIY gift for the guys in our lives and I LOVE it.  It’s simple, easy, and it actually looks store-bought.  My husband will definitely be getting one of these.

I love this style of iPad sleeve because it’ sleek, modern, and it looks quite classy. And guess what?  It’s actually a “Look for Less”.  He found the idea from a company called Hard Graft.  It is priced at $114.  Can you believe it?  YOU can make this for about $5!!!  Saving you $109. What?!?!?! (Remember to use coupons when shopping!)

What’s special about DIYing gifts is, you can customize the materials to match the person recieving it.  So….if you actually wanted to gift this to a woman and or anyone with maybe a kindle or another tablet, you can change up the measurements and you can use a different colored felt.  There are so many bright colorful felts in the fabric store, so you’ll have fun customizing this project.
feltHope you all enjoy.  Remember for a list of supplies you’ll need and the pattern that is needed to complete this project, head on over to Victor + Alexander.  Thumbs up the video if you think someone in your family would enjoy this gift. XOXOXO
