Sheath Dress with Leather Details

When Balmain hit the runway for the Fall fashion show this year, it had everyone’s attention.  Every single detail within each garment was beyond amazing. Every piece was literally wearable art.
Vogue Foundation Gala Arrivals - Paris Fashion Week : Haute-Couture Fall/Winter 2014-2015Although I am no where near as designed oriented as these high fashion designers, I was truly inspired by them.  I loved the colors and textures that each design carries.
milblogOlive being one of the hottest colors for Fall, I wanted to create a simple sheath dress while incorporating a simple detailing of leather.  I can sort of picture Kim K. wearing my dress. Can’t you? LOL! (Only in my dreams)
mil1blogAs for the dress, I used New Look’s 0167, view B. (I found it at a yard sale)  I basically made the dress exactly how the instructions stated. I looked at it and just thought it was quite boring so, I had some extra leather laying around so I decided that I wanted to incorporate it in the dress somehow. I played with a few designs, but ended up with this one.  I cut the shoulders of the dress apart and added the leather.  I understitched the neckline for the main part of the dress, but for the leather, I topstitched.
mil3blogI really loved how this dress came out. It looks a high-end, designer dress, but of course we all know that it wasn’t.  I purchased 2 yards of the fabric for $5/yd while in NY and the leather was scraps that I found laying around my house.

Celeb Look for Less: Floral Bomber Jacket

Hi everyone! Long time no see huh?! Well I had to take a much needed break, but no worries, I’m back. So I recently watched Sex and the City for the first time (I know. I know. I’m late!) And while watching, I was so inspired by the amount of fashion risks that Ms. Carrie Bradshaw took. I loved her extreme take on clothes. For example, she always went overboard with what she wore when just performing simple tasks. I thought it was hilarious and I loved it. So, let’s talk about my inspiration…bomberCollage Don’t you just love this jacket?! It’s so darn fabulous! It’s such a cool piece that can easily be dressed up or down, which is what I love about it.  It’s an easy piece that you throw on and can easily look pulled together. When walking through JoAnns Fabric Store, I remember spotting a similar style fabric in the Prom/ Wedding section. I NEVER would have though to turn this fabric into a jacket. It’s so clever and it’s such an unexpected fabric choice. So of course, I had to have it!
bomberIf you are looking to recreate this jacket and you are not interested in black, there are other colors; off-white and blush pink. Not a huge selection but with these colors are perfect neutrals. I’m actually thinking about making a pink one…hmmmm. The fabric is a bit pricey, $25/yd, but if you wait for a 50% off coupon the cost will be easier to cope with. LOL! It did for me at least. Also, the best part is, you’ll only need about 1.5 yds depending on the size you make. So can we say “Cheap but Chic!?”

bomber1The pattern that I chose to recreate Ms. Bradshaw’s floral bomber is New Look’s 6226 from the Project Runway line of patterns. This jacket is fully lined and was pretty easy to make. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I would say that this is for the intermediate seamstress, not so much for the beginner only because there a few techniques used that a beginner may not understand just yet.  I did have to make a change to the outcome of my jacket versus how it is supposed to be made.  I removed the panel in the center of the jacket. With the fabric that I chose, it would not have looked proportionate. If you choose a less bulkier, more simpler fabric, I think the panel in the front would be fine.

bomber3Ok. So I am going to style my jacket in a few different ways. Today, I wanted to dress my jacket casually with some simple thrifted distressed jean shorts, tights, and boots.  This is a look that I would wear when hanging out with the girls or shopping. And of course, you all know I love my black. :)

What are your thoughts on bomber jackets? Is it a closet staple for you this season?

Tailored

So, as some of you may know, I graduated from college back in June so now I am currently in job hunt mode. Well, not really so much a job; I’m looking for a career that I would enjoy. This post is my ode to that career women I dream of being.
tailI’m very ambitious. I want it all! When I do start working, I’m still going to keep my blog up and running. I’ve built this thing from the ground up and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I really enjoy blogging and I feel like I can manage it all. I’ve managed it while I was in school full time, so I hope it’s no different.

So this outfit is a bit more on the business casual side because of the bright colored shoes.  I love fuchsia and navy blue paired together. It’s just a beautiful coupling. The neutral animal print purse adds a more classic and high-end look to the entire outfit.  Besides the shoes being my favorite part of the outfit, my second fav is the skirt. Can you believe that it was only $10?! Yep!  I love the box pleat in the front and the belt that it came with is so modern and chic. The fabric is so beautiful and soft and I love that it allows you to look professional yet fashionable as well. I purchased the skirt from JC Penney. I think so many people have turned away from JCP. I don’t understand why though. They have such amazing clothing at amazing prices. I remember last year buying a tuxedo blazer for only $2. It was brand new with absolutely nothing wrong with it. JCP is definitely one of my favorite stores to shop. Do you shop there?
tail3

I love that my entire outfit was on clearance. My top was only $4. A crispy white button-up is a classic and must have in everyone’s wardrobe. My purse was around $6. An animal printed bag is such a fun added touch to any outfit. This  is also a staple that should be in a every woman’s closet. My skirt I mentioned above and lastly, I cannot forget my shoes. JustFab was having a buy 1 get 1 free deal so I jumped right on it.  A fun-colored shoe is a must have for those days when you want to dress up and hang out with the girls or a fun date with your guy. If you don’t have any of these classic pieces, I won’t be mad if you stop reading my blog and go get them for your closet now. It’s soooo needed, so I’ll understand.
tail1So what is your work uniform? What do you wear to work? I’d love to know. Also, I wanna to know, what is your dream job? Are you working there currently?
Thanks for stopping by! XOXO

Totally in the Mood

A brand new school year is around the corner, so I wanted to kick off August with my ode to ” Back to School”.
moodNot that I would recommend anyone to wear any “hot” pants to school or anything, but how cute are these? The hottest color for Summer was neon so why not transition it into Fall? I am!  What I love about the trends lately is, it’s all about doing what you want and however you feel you want to dress. If you want to wear a not so traditional color for that particular season you can do it. If you prefer that rolled out of bed look like I do, do it! It’s all about creating your own trends.
mood3To create the shorts, I used McCalls 6848. Yes, it is a pajamas pattern, but like I’ve always been telling you, you have to think outside the box. You don’t have to actually use the pattern for the purpose that it’s suggesting. I mean, you can use these to sleep in because they are quite comfortable, but you can also easily make these with other comfortable, fun, printed or solid color fabrics for your out and about style. You definitely need neon fabric in your life though. I got mine from Glam Fabrics.  Check out the shop. She added some very cute knit fabrics as well. These shorts are extremely easy and fast to make. I think they took about 1.5 hours. so you know what that means…Instant Gratification!
mood5So when I saw this jacket, I instantly fell in love. I love the whole high school varsity jacket vibe it gives off. The front and back of the jacket has that soft wool feel to it and the sleeves are a faux white leather. You guys know how much I love black and white. The best part about the jacket was that it was on clearance for only $25. Steal!
mood@I have to talk about my hair. My hair has been so good to me lately. I’ve been really trying to take care of it so that it can grow fast. Do you remember when I cut all of my hair off last year? (I was going through some thangs. LOL!) I’m definitely going to do a separate blog post on what I’ve been using on my hair lately to help it grow and stay hydrated.  Whatever I’ve been doing, it’s been working and I’m happy about it.

Keep it Short

So for the past couple of years, matching shorts sets have been a definite trend that’s been seen everywhere; whether it’s on your favorite celebs, your favorite fashion bloggers, or just random people you see on the street.  So, I figured why not make one?  But of course, I had to wait until I found the perfect fabric to get the look that I was looking for. When this outfit what finished, I wanted it to be bold, bright, and fun.  I wanted the shorts set to be the image of what Summer style should be; effortless, yet fashionable.
kisI’ve always seen Ankara fabric on other fashion bloggers, but I’ve never seen it for myself in person.  So while in New York, I came across several stores that sold this type of fabric and one particular store had this one for $5/yd!  That’s crazy cheap right?! SOLD!!! I bought a few yards and made this short set for myself and made a simple pillow case dress for my daughter that you can check out HERE if you haven’t seen it yet.
shortsetSo a lot of the shorts sets that I’ve seen were extremely short. If you can’t tell already, I’m quite conservative.  When I make clothes for myself, I keep in mind that first, I am a mom, and second, I am a married woman. I keep my sexiness very subtle. With that in mind, I kept the length of shorts decent enough to be able to go on an outing with my family and be able to still look chic while being quite comfortable.
kis4Let’s talk about the patterns. As you can probably already tell, this outfit was very easy to make.  I think each item took about 2-2.5 hours to complete. So a total of 4-5 hours for the entire look.  The instructions on both patterns were easy to follow and I didn’t need to make too many adjustments. The only adjustment that I made was shortening the top so that it sits just above my hips. My hips are kind of wide, and I did not want my shirt pulled down tight around my hips or bunched up around my stomach area. I wanted the look to be nice and crisp.

So every Summer, I run into thrift stores and I grab a few pairs of jeans and turn them into shorts because let’s be real, who in the world wants to spend over $20 on some shorts that you can distress at home?! Not me!  I purchased these Levi pants in the Men’s section at the thrift store.  I remember doing a post about thrifting when I first started blogging and the #1 rule I mentioned was to be open minded.  These “men’s” jeans are the perfect fit and surprisingly high-waist jeans. This cheap and easy look is everywhere and it’s extremely comfortable. My brother, whom some of you may know, has a men’s fashion blog and has recently posted an easy-to-follow tutorial on making your own distressed shorts. In the video, he features 2 styles that you can choose to create.  I will link the video at the bottom of this post.  But, for now, here is what I am wearing for the 4th (until I slip into some comfortable flats ofcourse!). rwb3rwb2rwb6rwb4rwb5rwb8Tshirt: Target// Sunnies: Target// Hoop Earrings: Charlotte Russe// Shorts: Thrift store + DIY// Heels: Zara

City Chic

Today I am channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw!  I made a different style of tulle skirt this time compared to the one that I previously posted that you can check out here.  This skirt is more of circle skirt style.  It has a lot more movement and when making one, it’s more tedious because it uses a lot more tulle. If you are interested in making one, the tutorial is located at the bottom of this post.

blush skirt2 For the underlining, I chose a satin fabric and purchased about 2 yards. As for the tulle, I used about 8 yards. And instead of a thick waistband that I usually like on my skirts, I chose to do a skinnier waistband which gave it a more delicate feel.  Tulle skirts are great and so versatile. You can wear them to a wedding, a party, brunch or tea party with the ladies.  If you follow me on Instagram @CHEAPBUTCHIC, you’ll be able to recognize this shot.  Leopard heels with a tulle skirt is such an unexpected accessory but gives the outfit a more edgy type look. So like a said, tulle skirts are absolutely versatile and should be in your closet.

Savannah Adventures

Ok, so while in Savannah, I wanted to present a fresh and clean look that was easy to pull off and somewhat easy to wear since I had both my children.  Mind you, I said somewhat because I chose to wear white and you know if you have children, it’s hard to keep clean when chasing them around.  The lipstick that I used was the perfect accessory to my overall look. It gave my look a bit of a retro feel so I really liked that.  I’m really into bright lips this season can you tell?

The lipstick that I used was the perfect accessory to my overall look. It gave my look a bit of a retro feel that I really liked. It has a matte finish and it is quite drying, but if you moisturize your lips prior to putting it on, you’ll be fine.  And the best part is, it lasts all day.  It’s actually kind of hard to clean off.  I’m really into bright lips this season can you tell?

Let’s get Savvy

This past weekend I  finally got the chance to go to Savannah, Georgia.  My little brother, Joshua from Victor + Alexander, goes to SCAD so I went with my parents to go pick him up.  While in Savannah, I had a vision in my mind of how men dress in this southern atmosphere so when packing clothes for my son, I imagined a sophisticated, yet fun look that basically kids and adults can pull off.  May I say that my son received so many compliments that day.
ty12

I’m still not sure where my son got his modeling techniques from, but I’m really enjoying watching him work the camera.  For being only 2 years old, I love how photogenic he is.
