Sewing Studio Makeover + DIY Decor + Giveaway

Hi everyone!

So for a month and half, I have been working long and hard behind the scenes making over a room in my home.  It took me a minute to decide what I wanted this particular room to be but eventually I figured it out.  So…you all know that for a while, I’ve had a sewing closet.  I’ve always dreamt of having a sewing studio so I felt that this was my chance to go for it.  So I wanted to describe my style very briefly so that you are able to understand the direction I was going in:

  • “Cheap but Chic”- I wanted my room to portray an expensive look and feel, without the high price tag.
  • Minimal- I wanted the room to have a clean feel with a simple color palette.
  • Inspirational- I wanted to feel inspired in every direction I looked whether through words, pictures, or colors.

Here I provided a few BEFORE shots of my space:
BEFORE1 BEFORE2 BEFORE3 BEFORE4 BEFORE5

In order to eliminate the high price tag, I shopped around my house for stuff I can incorporate into my space and of course the room would not be me if it did not have DIY projects.  Below are a few pictures of DIY projects that I created.  I made my own curtains, wall art, painted my frames, faux metal knick knacks, painted my vases, inspiration board, shelving units, book covers and pillows. You probably want to know how I did all of this right?  Well, you are in luck! I show you how in the video I provided at the end of this blog post. But first, here are the “AFTER” photos of my brand new sewing studio.

Red-Lined

I absolutely love how sophisticated Olivia Pope’s coats are.  I wanted to make a coat that she would possibly wear but instead of the neutral palette that she sticks to, I wanted to make one in a fun, bright color.  Although, I made this coat about 2 weeks ago with my mother, Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing my color of choice.

If you sew or shop for fabric you know that wool is quite expensive.  It’s almost better to buy a coat that’s already made.  But, hold your horses…I scored some beautiful mustard colored wool for only $5.99/ yd at Hancock Fabrics.  Can you believe it?

I must also mention that I did not make this coat by myself.  My mother actually helped me a ton.  THANK YOU MOMMY!  I decided to start filming a new series called “Behind the Scenes” of things that I do behind the camera.  This was my first time sewing with my mother who has been sewing longer than I’ve been living. Surprising right?  She lives a bit far from me so sewing is the last thing on our minds when we get together. 1422623_744475725581982_21026249_n

So here’s the story behind the red lining. I chose red lining because it’s unexpected and it reminds me of the luxurious Christian Louboutin heels also known as “Red Bottoms.” 1459085_744064735623081_1038458442_n

I hope you guys enjoy the “Behind the Scenes” video on this coat.  We give you a review on the pattern; for beginners or advanced.  My mom also gives tips along the way when sewing this coat and so much more.  If you guys enjoy this new series, make it known and I’ll do more.  Thanks for stopping by. coat10coatCollagecoat6coat71coat5coatcoat8coat9Pattern Used: McCalls 6800

Details

Chambray has been pretty popular these past few years.  It goes with just about everything and it’s extremely comfortable.  You can dress it up or down, with jeans, chiffon, did I mention it goes with just about everything.  It’s a neutral fabric!

I found this chambray dress at TJ Maxx last year and fell in love with the mini gold studding details on the sleeves and on the collar.  This dress I felt was perfect for Spring, but I love it so much that I didn’t just want to use it for one season.
DSC_0167Details in an outfit take your whole look to another level.  The fall scarf, black opaque tights, and gold-tip booties took this dress from Spring to Fall.  I’m warm, I’m comfortable, and boy do I feel fancy. LOL!

Home Sweet Home

So my entryway was bit boring so i decided that I wanted to make aa easy custom wall art that would match the rest of the decor in my home. While scrolling Pinterest, I came across this one. It was love at first site!homesI changed it up a bit by adding a 3D effect to the  word “SWEET” and I made the same word a metallic finish. To make it as bold as the one above I am in search for the perfect at local thrift stores or yard sales taht I can paint gold. I think that’ll tie it together.
1235895_692466310782924_1651500212_nhomesweethomeThis was a pretty easy project to complete within a few hours. You can make it your own by choosing to do a phrase or children’s names.  Have fun with it and no matter what you decide, I’m sure it’ll look great.  Remember to follow me on Instagram @Cheapbutchic to see what I am doing behind the scenes and please support my channel by subscribing.

Make a Statement w/ a Boring Tee (For Men & Women)

We have so many t-shirts lying around our house. Why not transform them into something that makes a statement.  I joined up with my little brother, Joshua, (owner of Victor Alexander Co.) on this DIY and we both decided that this week we will give you a little taste of our style and how we would refashion a boring t-shirt.
