Sewing Studio Makeover + DIY Decor + Giveaway

Hi everyone!

So for a month and half, I have been working long and hard behind the scenes making over a room in my home.  It took me a minute to decide what I wanted this particular room to be but eventually I figured it out.  So…you all know that for a while, I’ve had a sewing closet.  I’ve always dreamt of having a sewing studio so I felt that this was my chance to go for it.  So I wanted to describe my style very briefly so that you are able to understand the direction I was going in:

  • “Cheap but Chic”- I wanted my room to portray an expensive look and feel, without the high price tag.
  • Minimal- I wanted the room to have a clean feel with a simple color palette.
  • Inspirational- I wanted to feel inspired in every direction I looked whether through words, pictures, or colors.

Here I provided a few BEFORE shots of my space:
BEFORE1 BEFORE2 BEFORE3 BEFORE4 BEFORE5

In order to eliminate the high price tag, I shopped around my house for stuff I can incorporate into my space and of course the room would not be me if it did not have DIY projects.  Below are a few pictures of DIY projects that I created.  I made my own curtains, wall art, painted my frames, faux metal knick knacks, painted my vases, inspiration board, shelving units, book covers and pillows. You probably want to know how I did all of this right?  Well, you are in luck! I show you how in the video I provided at the end of this blog post. But first, here are the “AFTER” photos of my brand new sewing studio.

Watercolors

So the trend continues with the All Over Print type of look and if you follow me on instagram (@cheapbutchic) you know I have been on roll with pushing out these types of looks lately.

So let me talk about the fabric.  The fabric that I have been gravitating towards lately is cotton.  Not alot of people sew clothes with this type of material typically, but I’ve been watching alot of designers step out the usual apparel fabric and experiement with different textiles. Lately, I’ve seen quilted skirts made out of quitling fabric with the attached batting.  I’ve also seen a whole lot of neoprene.  Haven’t you?!  Once I get my hands on some that I actually like, I’m definitely making a skirt.  Anyhow, back to the subject at hand.  I purchased my fabric from Hancock Fabrics.  It was part of their value fabrics line so it was under, I think $5/yd.  I purchased two yards.  I love the watercolor effect that the print has. It’s so pretty.  The reason why I’ve been loving cotton fabrics is because there are more options for unique prints.  And this year, I am all for unique prints.

Now let’s talk design.  Just like the previous crop top in an older post, I made my own pattern for this crop top as well.  I PROMISE, I’ll have that tutorial to you guys soon.  I’m making a few tweaks here and there which is why it’s not out yet.  As for the skirt, I also did not use a pattern.  I wanted something bold, so this definitely worked for me.  I found a quick instructional on Pinterest and made this skirt within 2 hours.  It took a bit of math, but I got it done.  Here a few tutorials that you can check out. You can click any of the links below.  If you are a visual learner.  I’m quite behind, but I’m working on providing a tutorial for you.

From “Hallelujah” to “I Wanna Do Ya!”

Hi everyone.  So for Pretty Girls Sew (www.prettygirlssew.com) this month we had to shop our closets or the Thrift Stores and take 2 items from Drab to Fab.  And boy was that a lot of fun!!!
11-thrift-shop

When I heard the challenge for the month, I already knew what I wanted to create.  I wanted to make a romper with a heart cut-out in the back.  How cute would that be right?  Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way for me.  It’s obvious that I had a lot of material to work with, but the way the dress was made, it was difficult for me to make shorts.  I was pretty discouraged….only for a few hours though. LOL!
drab

So this dress was pretty difficult for me to alter.  The dress was strangely made.  I had to do a lot to make the dress exactly how I pictured it in my mind.  This dress took me 3 days to fix.  Below are the steps that I took to alter my Grandma dress.from Drab

DSC_0096
1. Removed both sleeves and slimmed one sleeve to fit my arm.
2. Slimmed the body of the dress to fit the curves of my body.
3. Cut the top off at an angle to mimic the one-shoulder look.
4. When I cut off the top, I cut the zipper, so I had to remove the old zipper and replace it with a new one.
5. I slimmed down the arm hole so that I was able to place my arm sleeve in it perfectly.
6. I created a high-low look, so I hemmed the dress at two different lengths.
7. I had to add larger darts because the dress was originally made for a big breasted woman, which I am not.
8. Lastly, I just made a few small alterations to make the dress hug my body at the right spots.
