Keep it Short

So for the past couple of years, matching shorts sets have been a definite trend that’s been seen everywhere; whether it’s on your favorite celebs, your favorite fashion bloggers, or just random people you see on the street.  So, I figured why not make one?  But of course, I had to wait until I found the perfect fabric to get the look that I was looking for. When this outfit what finished, I wanted it to be bold, bright, and fun.  I wanted the shorts set to be the image of what Summer style should be; effortless, yet fashionable.
kisI’ve always seen Ankara fabric on other fashion bloggers, but I’ve never seen it for myself in person.  So while in New York, I came across several stores that sold this type of fabric and one particular store had this one for $5/yd!  That’s crazy cheap right?! SOLD!!! I bought a few yards and made this short set for myself and made a simple pillow case dress for my daughter that you can check out HERE if you haven’t seen it yet.
shortsetSo a lot of the shorts sets that I’ve seen were extremely short. If you can’t tell already, I’m quite conservative.  When I make clothes for myself, I keep in mind that first, I am a mom, and second, I am a married woman. I keep my sexiness very subtle. With that in mind, I kept the length of shorts decent enough to be able to go on an outing with my family and be able to still look chic while being quite comfortable.
kis4Let’s talk about the patterns. As you can probably already tell, this outfit was very easy to make.  I think each item took about 2-2.5 hours to complete. So a total of 4-5 hours for the entire look.  The instructions on both patterns were easy to follow and I didn’t need to make too many adjustments. The only adjustment that I made was shortening the top so that it sits just above my hips. My hips are kind of wide, and I did not want my shirt pulled down tight around my hips or bunched up around my stomach area. I wanted the look to be nice and crisp.

Happy Saturday everyone!
Is it hot where you are? Because it…is….HOT in Virginia! Good grief!
Ok. So…..who is ready for Back to School?!  My daughter is going into the Kindergarten and she is super excited. I am too!  I’m excited for her to learn and make friends. She is a very social little one. LOL! She is always asking me to take her places and I dread it because I’m such a homebody. ;) So because school is coming up soon, my kids will be on the blog a bit more than usual. Who doesn’t love cute kids though? I will be featuring some easy back to school looks and DIY’s that you can create for your love bugs.
lj1Me and my daughter have decided that this outfit will be her 1st day of school outfit. My little fashionista has arrived.
ch1So let’s talk about the main purpose of this blog post; these pants. They literally take about 1.5 hours to make. The fabric that I chose was a cotton with a small amount of spandex. You can find it JoAnn Fabrics. You can also use 100% cotton as well. I made them for my son in a previous post and used cotton for his pants. You can check out that post HERE. I am totally going to make several of these style of pants in different prints because they are extremely easy, fast, and I love how many prints I can choose to make these out of.
ch4As you may have noticed about my children’s clothes, I don’t like things to be too childish or too cutesy. I’m more into the modern and bold prints that are simple to pull together. Keep in mind when making kids clothes, that they have to be able to run and play in them as well. So like I said, these pants are perfect for that.
ch5These pants are totally versatile. They can be dressed up or down.  In this particular post, she is dressed down. She can run, jump, and play. In a future post, I’ll show you how you can take these pants and make your baby girl look fancy. Hence the title of this blog “Cheap but Chic”. In all honesty, these pants do look expensive. Don’t they? They were just under $10 to make though.

 Summa Summa Summa Time…
We are in the middle of Summer and who in the world wants it to end? Not this girl! So….guess what? I made this skirt about 3-4 months ago. I know I know. As amazing as it is, how in the world could I have let this this baby slip away? Well, it’s the middle of summer and I felt that now was the perfect time to show her off.
safari6So ofcourse I found my fabric at my favorite fabric shop on Etsy; GlamFabrics. No surprise right? LOL! I definitely stocked up from that pretty little shop.  You should too! There are so many hidden gems there! You can check it out HERE. Anyhow, I’ve totally been geeking over pleats for the past few months and I wanted to somehow do something different than your typical gathered skirt. So pleats it was!
safari3 Lets talk about this tote!! I’ve had this thing for 2 years and NEVER used it. I mean seriously….Have I lost my mind?  I love it! Especially with this outfit.  Its a perfect beach bag that gives me a bit of a Moroccan vibe. Cute!
safari5 So as far as the pleats in this skirt. If you didn’t know they are specifically called box pleats. They aren’t too difficult.  Here are a few tutorials that I found on Pinterest that could help you get started. Check HERE and HERE.

One of the biggest trends for Summer and Fall 2014 are bold prints.  When I went to NY this weekend and saw this print I had to get it.  The fabric is an African fabric called Ankara. It’s a cotton fabric with a waxy coating on the front side of the fabric.  It’s extremely easy to work with. To me, it’s kind of stiff…like paper. But the variety of prints that Ankara has is endless. This type of fabric is bright, colorful, and beautiful.
ankara3So aside from making myself and outfit from this particular fabric, I had some leftover so, I had to make my sweet baby girl something. BTW, she kept asking me to make her something since she saw my son not wanting to change his pants from the ones I made in a previous post that you can check out here. Pillowcase dresses have been around for so long and I’ve always wanted to make my daughter one, but never had the chance too. But, I made one last night and it took me about 1.5 hours. This dress was extremely easy! And my daughter received so many compliments on it.  The women at church couldn’t even believe that I made this dress. And that brought a smile to my face. Oh! And the bow….I made that it 15 min. I think anyone can make a hair bow with their eyes closed; cute and simple!
ankara1I love these dresses because they can transition from a dress into a tunic. And, if you don’t care for a fabric bow, you can opt for a wide ribbon.  Sewing gives you so many possibilities.  There are so many tutorials on Pinterest if you are interested in making one. You can check out this one HERE and HERE. These dresses are a fast option if you ever in need of an outfit for that little girl in your life. Oh! I didn’t mention what a fabulous and inexpensive gift this would be!

So if you follow me on IG, (@cheapbutchic), you already know that I wore a jumper to the  Wendy Williams show.  On IG, I asked you all how I should wear it because I was getting so many mixed reviews. So in the post, I’ll show you both looks and at the end, I’ll let you know which one I chose.  So for this look, I chose to use McCalls 6969.

WW3I did quite a bit of alterations to achieve the look that I was going for.
1. I used the bottoms of view B and the top of view D.
2. I wanted the bottoms to be a bit more fitted so, I subtracted about 2 inches of seam allowance on both legs.
3. I did not add an elastic to the waistband. Instead I used either an elastic gold belt and I made a green sash to tie around my waist.
4. The jumper to didn’t have a feminie feel to it, so instead of the elastic at the bottom of each leg, I added a cuff with a ties that I had to tie into a knot. When tied, it looked like mini bows, and it gave me the feminine flair I was looking for.
greenjump2 GreenJump1There are a couple of things changes that I should have done that I also wanted to mention. The first would be to add pockets.  I think it would have made the look more relaxed.  The second thing is to stitch from the crotch area, up to the first button on the bottom. The instructions don’t tell you this, but when you sit down, that area opens up and you have to adjust every time you sit.  I hated that. One more thing, the instructions to the collar was extremely confusing to me. I guess it was because I’ve never sewn a blazer or anything with this type of collar but I finally figured it out.

He’s Baaaaack!
School is around the corner, so what better time then now to create some staple pieces for their Fall wardrobe? Fabric prints nowadays can be quite cheesy and just typical.  When I ran across these prints, I fell to the floor.  I had to get them!  I love that the animals on the fabric gives off a more modern vibe.  Also, this fabric is 100% organic cotton so it’s great for your children’s skin. No rashes or breakouts here!
animal2You can use this fabric to create jogger pants, like I did, you can make shorts, and you know what?  These prints would make AWESOME button-up shirts for our little boys! I know you wanna know where you can get your hands on it right? Well, there is no other place other than GlamFabrics. I’ve written a blog post about this shop in the past. You can check it out HERE. The owner is extremely nice. Like I said before, I don’t know her personally but, I wish I did. The shipping on whatever you order is quite fast. To get a direct link to the shop, you can click on the photo below.
glamfabricsSo before I get into what I made with this amazing fabric, I want to let you know that she has other options. For the fabric to be organic, it is extremely affordable. You defintiely can’t beat this price. If you plan on making clothes for your babies or toddlers you may want hurry up and make your purchase because I can foresee these fabrics flying off the shelves rather quick. Oh! I almost forgot!  Use code Tabitha15 for 15% off your total purchase. Click on the photos for direct links of each option.

il_570xN_619435252_h8z4So I decided to make some little jogger pants for my son. They were the easiest to make without a pattern. I do plan on showing you how in a future post since I also have the fox fabric.

racoonpants2 But all I did was fold the fabric in half and cut out the shape of some sweat pants my son already had. I cut 2 front pieces and 2 back pieces. I added 2 inches to the leg and 2 inches to the top. I stitched each leg individually. I then turned one pant leg right side out.  I placed the pants leg that was right side out, inside of the other pant leg and I stitched the crotch together. Once that was done, I turned the pants inside out and I created an elastic casing to both legs and waist. Insert the elastic, stitch the opening closed, and you are finished! It really wasn’t hard. Literally took me and hour. But like I said, I’ll have a tutorial soon.
racoonpants1So here is my son’s look. He was so excited to get back in front of the camera. LOL! Oh! You can follow along on IG as well @tylerandalana.

So this past weekend, I had the time of my life while visiting NY.  I went to celebrate my birthday with my younger brother and my husband. This is not my first time going, but we did have a few first time experiences.  This is sort of like my NY trip diary.  Just in case you were planning on going in the future, these are the things that we did during our trip and you may want to try as well. So first I must say, please excuse the quality of some of the photos. They were taken with an iphone and I could not adjust the size so that it would be clearer.

Saturday, July 12, 2014
Besides walking Times Square like every tourist should experience, we went to watch my first Broadway show.  We watched the most amazing “The Lion King”. It is definitely on my list of Top 20 most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The details and work that was put into this show was impeccable. It was definitely jaw dropping.  The tickets may seem expensive for some, but I promise you, every single penny is well worth this show.

We did enjoy a few great restaurants, but this one in particular was quite different. It was called “Rice to Riches” and all they sold was different flavored rice pudding.  It’s a place that is definitely unique and cannot be found anywhere else. Not too many people like rice pudding, but I do. They had to many different flavors to try. I ordered the cheesecake flavor and let me tell you, it was mouthwatering.  This dish that the rice comes in is also very modern and unique. I loved everything about this place.

rice-to-riches

cn_image_size_rice-to-riches-new-york-cityny5Another great spot was the famous Sprinkles Cupcakes. I have to be honest, their cupcakes are not the best. I’ve had better, but this place was unique because they off the worlds first cupcake ATM.  Sounds crazy right? The ATM dispenses cupcakes 24 hours. You can choose whatever cupcake you want, pay with your credit card, and outcomes a nicely packaged Sprinkles Cupcake.
Cupcake_ATM_NYC_SprinklesSprinkles Cupcake ATM New York City 4032414CupcakeZM01.jpgSpeaking of cupcakes, Baked by Melissa was pretty cute as well. They offer bite size cupcakes that literally melt in your mouth. Each one is a $1 and worth every penny.
baked-by-melissacupcakes2_600Coming off the food subject, my husband and I are fans of a show called Oddities. It’s a strange show filmed in a store titled Obscura. Basically what they sell are extremely odd things that you would not think to purchase like human teeth, animal bones, stuffed hyena, etc. To me, it’s more a like a gothic type store. Since we watch on television, we figured that we would actually like to go to the store itself. It was weird. Even the salespeople were different. They were very nice though.

Happy Birthday to me! On Monday I woke up super early to get myself ready for the Wendy show. If you get a chance to go, make sure you go! It was extremely fun! It was like a party during the commercials. People were twerking and making their knees touch their elbows….LOL!  They even chose my brother to be apart of a dance contest. LOL! And hands down…he won! LOL! It was great. So I am definitely a fan of the show and being in the audience was an experience within itself. A few people surprised me with pictures they took if me while I was in the Wendy audience.
ny6ny7This is a picture of me with Wendy’s hype man. He did an excellent job. His job was to keep the party going. And that he did!
ny1After the show, we went to eat and we did a bit of shopping and ofcourse I could not go home without going to the garment district. Now let me warn you, if you love fabric, you will literally have a heart attack if you go. I needed an oxygen tank. LOL! I went to several shops. Most of them seemed the same. Some stuck out to me and that’s where I spent most of my money. And let me tell how excited I was to go into Mood Fabrics. Just to walk down the aisles where the Project Runway cast were able to come was literally a dream. It was great.  It was expensive but great.

I’m so glad I don’t live near here because I would literally go broke. The fashion/ garment district is dream place for every designer or seamstress. This is a must see if you are in NY. Well, I hope that you enjoyed my diary. My Wendy Williams OOTD will be posting soon, along with my outfits that I wore during my 3 days stay there. They are several posts to follow so hope you’re up for it.

Fabric Statement Necklace

So….I’m extremely behind on this necklace. I was hoping to film a tutorial on this, but since I am so behind on my videos, I decided to share this pictorial (picture tutorial) on my blog.
necklacefinal2

If you follow me on IG (@cheapbutchic) you’ll know that I made this necklace months ago.  So enough with the talking. Here is what you will need:
necklaceCollageIf you can, use your scraps of fabric. Have you made a tulle skirt lately? Use those scraps. Here is the step-by-step tutorial, If you have questions, comment below. If you’ve completed this project and would like for me to check it out, tag me on IG. I’d love to see your finished project.

Step 1: Trace the shape of the visor onto the felt. Cut shape out.
necklace6Step 2:  Cut out two 20 in. pieces of your satin ribbon. Stitch one end of each ribbon to the corners of your felt. Optional- Use a liquid fray prevention to stop the ends of the ribbon from fraying. You can find it at JoAnns.
necklace71
Step 3: Cut out several circles from your tulle and satin fabric. Remember, the circles do not have to be perfect.
necklace81
Step 4: Take one circle, whether satin or tulle and fold on half.
necklace9Step 5: Then, fold in half again. Place hot glue onto tip of your folded fabric and place onto the felt.  Repeat steps 3 & 4 with both satin and tulle circles. Be sure to spread out both fabrics evenly for a more full and floral-like texture. Also, work fast. Each piece of fabric needs another to stand up on it’s point.

necklace10

And that’s it!  This necklace would look great to spice up any regular t-shirt or it would look nice with a simple dress. Have fun with it!

Happy 4th of July everyone! Hope you are all in good health.
necklaceNote: Click HERE to learn how to make the DIY Satin Necklace

So every Summer, I run into thrift stores and I grab a few pairs of jeans and turn them into shorts because let’s be real, who in the world wants to spend over $20 on some shorts that you can distress at home?! Not me!  I purchased these Levi pants in the Men’s section at the thrift store.  I remember doing a post about thrifting when I first started blogging and the #1 rule I mentioned was to be open minded.  These “men’s” jeans are the perfect fit and surprisingly high-waist jeans. This cheap and easy look is everywhere and it’s extremely comfortable. My brother, whom some of you may know, has a men’s fashion blog and has recently posted an easy-to-follow tutorial on making your own distressed shorts. In the video, he features 2 styles that you can choose to create.  I will link the video at the bottom of this post.  But, for now, here is what I am wearing for the 4th (until I slip into some comfortable flats ofcourse!). rwb3rwb2rwb6rwb4rwb5rwb8Tshirt: Target// Sunnies: Target// Hoop Earrings: Charlotte Russe// Shorts: Thrift store + DIY// Heels: Zara
