Sewing Studio Makeover + DIY Decor + Giveaway

Hi everyone!

So for a month and half, I have been working long and hard behind the scenes making over a room in my home.  It took me a minute to decide what I wanted this particular room to be but eventually I figured it out.  So…you all know that for a while, I’ve had a sewing closet.  I’ve always dreamt of having a sewing studio so I felt that this was my chance to go for it.  So I wanted to describe my style very briefly so that you are able to understand the direction I was going in:

  • “Cheap but Chic”- I wanted my room to portray an expensive look and feel, without the high price tag.
  • Minimal- I wanted the room to have a clean feel with a simple color palette.
  • Inspirational- I wanted to feel inspired in every direction I looked whether through words, pictures, or colors.

Here I provided a few BEFORE shots of my space:
BEFORE1 BEFORE2 BEFORE3 BEFORE4 BEFORE5

In order to eliminate the high price tag, I shopped around my house for stuff I can incorporate into my space and of course the room would not be me if it did not have DIY projects.  Below are a few pictures of DIY projects that I created.  I made my own curtains, wall art, painted my frames, faux metal knick knacks, painted my vases, inspiration board, shelving units, book covers and pillows. You probably want to know how I did all of this right?  Well, you are in luck! I show you how in the video I provided at the end of this blog post. But first, here are the “AFTER” photos of my brand new sewing studio.

Home Sweet Home

So my entryway was bit boring so i decided that I wanted to make aa easy custom wall art that would match the rest of the decor in my home. While scrolling Pinterest, I came across this one. It was love at first site!homesI changed it up a bit by adding a 3D effect to the  word “SWEET” and I made the same word a metallic finish. To make it as bold as the one above I am in search for the perfect at local thrift stores or yard sales taht I can paint gold. I think that’ll tie it together.

You can make it your own by choosing to do a phrase or children’s names.  Have fun with it and no matter what you decide, I’m sure it’ll look great.  Remember to follow me on Instagram @Cheapbutchic to see what I am doing behind the scenes and please support my channel by subscribing.

Old is New Again

If you have children, you can definitely relate with me. I have a beautiful 4 yr old baby girl and a handsome 1 yr old baby boy that love crafting like me.  They love drawing, and painting ON MY FURNITURE!  Ugghhh….You can feel my irritation right?  It doesn’t matter how much paper I give my son, he just puts his artwork on everything but…

So, before I show you my before pictures don’t judge me. LOL! I should have completed this DIY a long time ago because the dried in food, spilled juice, and artwork isn’t a pleasant site.

Before, the cushion on my chairs were a cream colored upholstery fabric.  This time, I wanted to make sure that I protected my beautiful fabric that I chose, so I first chose a clean, white upholstery fabric with embossed circles and on top I added a light vinyl. I chose a white fabric because it has a clean, fresh finish and the vinyl will make it harder for food and drinks to stain my cushions.

You can accomplish this DIY on thrifted furniture too.  If you see something in a second hand store with a beautiful frame, grab it. Paint it, stain it, then reupholster it.  Here is the tutorial on how you can easily upcycle your old dining chairs.  If you haven’t already, please be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel and comment and like this post if you are excited about Home Décor DIYs.

UpCycle an Old Desk

Hi guys!

So I have been wanting a Makeup Vanity for so long.  Obviously there are plenty out there, but the prices were killing me!  There were even some really nice ones on Craigslist, but I would have had to drive too many miles just to pick it up, and I know my husband wouldn’t be up for that. So I decided to try a desk when I saw this one in the store.  It was small enough to be a vanity and had enough drawers to house all my makeup.

DSC_0035This desk was only $10! I purchased it at the Goodwill and it was on sale that week. So I thought that was a score.

I wanted a really clean & classy look to it, so I decided to paint it black and white.  We purchased some inexpensive paint from Walmart and came out with something that was better than I could find in a store for the price that I got it for.

If you decide to upcycle some furniture or even make your own Makeup Vanity, send me a pic or comment below. I would love to see! Here are the steps that I took to complete this project.

1. Removed hardware and sanded old varnish or paint off of the desk.
2. Painted desk with a primer, preferably Kilz.
3. Paint desk with white paint.
4. Outlined each drawer with a paint brush and black paint (You don’t need much so you can purchase a sample size from Lowes).
5. When the desk has completely dried, I sprayed it with a clear protectant.
6. For the hardware, I spray painted it with a glossy black spray paint. Once dry, I sprayed a clear protectant over it and screwed it back onto the desk.
